FAQ

Q1. What does a ride cost to a client?

We do not charge for the service.  We do welcome donations, however, no one is obligated to pay anything.  All contributions go into our general program operating budget.

Q2. How much time should I give you to find a volunteer to drive me to a physician's appointment?

We ask for at least 5 working days notice before your appointment.

Q3. What determines whether I get a volunteer driver/companion?

Many criteria determine the schedule.  Most important is the simply the date and time of your appointment.  It is easier to find a volunteer to drive between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  Where you live and where you are going is also important.  We try to find a driver close to you.  Volunteers may accept or decline any ride for any reason.

Q4. When will I know you don't have a driver for me?

Usually the day before your appointment.  Sometimes we will try, up to the last minute.  It is important for a client to try to have a "fallback" strategy, since we cannot guarantee that we can find a driver in every case.  This is a requested service, not a demanded one.

Q5. How do you register a client?

Phone 404.377.2273.  You must be 55 years of age or older, live in Dekalb County, and unable to use other transportation services or afford a taxi.  You must be able to walk, even if you need assistance.  We will ask you some questions over the phone when you call to register to see if we can accept you as a client.  Sometimes we will refer you to another agency.

Q6. How do I become a volunteer?

Phone 404.377.2273.  A staff member will talk to and mail (or email) information to read and consider before you make a commitment to volunteer. You must agree to provide your own automobile, pay for gasoline, keep your auto insurance current, and abide by I CARE's rules.  You will be asked for references, and will need to visit our offices for a personal interview.

Q7. What qualities does a volunteer need to have?

Empathy for older people, excellent communications skills, patience, strong ethical standards, honesty, and punctuality .

Q8. Do you ever "drop" a volunteer?

Yes.  If a volunteer does not show for a ride, and does not offer a reasonable explanation, or if they violate any of the other rules.  Termination is very rare.  Most of our volunteers are exceptional people who are kind, compassionate, and caring.  Some have been with the program for several years.

Q9. How long is a typical ride?

Four hours round-trip.  Some may be less, and some more.  We try to find out the estimated time when we take the ride request.

Q10. How many times is a volunteer expected to drive?

Volunteers tell us how often they wish to drive.  It ranges from several times a week to once a month.  A volunteer may also take a leave of absence for a vacation or for other reasons.
